Corrida Arena

While you are unlikely to find any objection from the public to attend a flamenco show or admire the architecture of Gaudi, you may find the subject of criticism if you attend a bullfight.

Undoubtedly, the industry of bullfighting in Spain is one of the most controversial. Fans of the sport and militant animal rights continue to clash over the legitimacy of it as a game against the welfare of animals involved.

Supporters of the sport argue that bullfighting is an art, with deep cultural roots in Spanish history which must be preserved to support Spanish tradition. Those who oppose bullfighting argue that sport is cruel and torment a bull angry and subjecting him to physical torture is a violation of animal rights and should be banned as a barbaric tradition.

Barcelona is one of three Spanish cities that still stages bullfights, with Madrid and Seville, mainly between April and September. While the city used to be home to three distinct fighting bulls Arenas today one is still active: El Plaza del Toros Monumental, which was built in 1914.

In April 2004, a petition was lodged with the city council of Barcelona, with more than 250,000 signatures protesting against the sport as a cruel and barbaric act. The deputy mayor, Jordi Portabella, has also been in support of the ban said: "The capital of Catalonia, Barcelona, must act as a principal and be a pioneer in the abolition of bullfighting.

To some extent, the petition was a success. The city has declared itself an "anti-bullfighting city and children under 14 were forbidden to attend, but the fighting itself does not stop.

Cruelty to animals is not the only argument raised against bullfighting. In Barcelona, the Catalan local residents also argue that the reason why the sport should be outlawed is that it is "a Spanish tradition," not a Catalan, and the capital of Catalonia should not support a traditional pastime Spanish.

About 100 bulls are killed each year in Barcelona. A bullfight or "corrida de toros" is a work in three parts, each segment reported by a horn. In the first round, two Picadores enter the arena on horseback. The horses were blindfolded, and with severe risk injury if the bull catching with them. The purpose of Picadores is to stab the bull in the neck, causing blood loss and weaken the raging bull.

In the second stage, Banderilleros two enter the arena on foot, with the goal to break the strong sides of the bubble with beards neat banderillas.

Finally, the matador, the star of the show man enters with a mullet (cape), with the objective to stay away from the horns of bulls as part of a series of quick maneuvers, twisting the cap in a sort of dance. Finally, the Matador will try to kill the bull by stabbing it between his shoulder blades, where the heart is. If he misses, he must retrieve a sword and try again.

The death of the Bull is rarely quick and often requires several attempts to stab wounds before the final blow is struck. Sometimes the bull is weakened by blood loss and injury to establish much of the fight, it makes death a little faster, but less exciting for the crowd.

Although the number of spectators at bullfights are about decline, it seems to always be a market for the curious tourists and the Spanish fans keeping the industry alive, but recent reports in the local press indicate that due to financial difficulties, Bala, now with the current lease at Plaza Monumental, will be forced to shut operations by 2008.

If this happens, it would be difficult or impossible to revive the sport in Barcelona, since the construction of the arena has been excluded from by the council. Meanwhile, the future of monumental remains uncertain. Talks are ongoing and strongly supported by Vice Mayor Portabello, turning the building History in a flea market outdoors. No agreement has yet been signed, but the local support could visit the place becomes a more peaceful place for tourists and residents to enjoy, whatever their position on the issue.
